Study in the UK for International Students

If you have decided to study at a university in England, rest assured, it is easier than you think.

In fact, in England what to get to university is to have good grades in high school (mainly in recent years), the notes to the baccalaureate will also be a plus and also certify that you have a level of education, correct English not to be too misplaced (a 6 out of 9 on the IELTS exam, something not too difficult to get).

If you want to study at a university in England or the United Kingdom, continue reading because here we explain everything you need to know, steps, requirements and fees.

Keep in mind that nothing has changed with Brexit (for the moment). So do not let this problem worry you and move you back.

Reasons to study at the University in England

More and more students decide to study their university career at a British university, and they have plenty of reasons.

1. Prestige recognized worldwide

The UK University System is one of the most popular in the world, and many of its universities are in the TOP 10 best universities on the planet. But do not think that Oxford or Cambridge, there are many other universities whose name will say a lot about the person who studied there.

2. Good value for money

I do not want to lie to you, university in the UK is not cheap. All universities cost about £ 9,000 a year, but you’ll do it with pleasure: first-class facilities, 24-hour film libraries, extra activities, and more. Keep in mind that here the career is done in 3 years.

The facilities of each university are among the best in the world. Here, money is not wasted when it comes to improving the university system. Monumental libraries, laboratories equipped with the latest technology and all the necessary technological advances, many of which have been requested by the students themselves.

Computer resources are also a very strong point, they are on the front page to ensure that no student is left behind because of these problems.

3. Master your English

You cannot come to study your career in a university thinking that you will learn English from zero to one hundred, you have to have at least a correct level. The university will do the rest, live completely immersed in the language and study all types of subjects will allow you to master once and for all English to finally become bilingual.

Besides, nowhere else will you learn English better than in Britain? It goes without saying that you will not learn a language better than in the country where it is spoken. If you also study subjects that fascinate you, the result will be visible quickly, even if sometimes you will be bilingual before knowing it. Little more, being English the language spoken in the world, better than that, you die.

In addition, English is the language used in the world of international business, so in addition to helping you with tourism, it will also allow you to open doors to hundreds of good jobs in the not too distant future.

You can improve or start learning English on your own before you leave. This will help you to be more relaxed at first.

4. Open mindedness

The British universities welcome every year thousands of students worldwide. So they have a very international atmosphere that will open your mind and allow you to have new perspectives, ideas and opinions towards the world. They say that about 10% of UK university students are foreigners.

The prestige that universities in the United Kingdom have accumulated has turned campuses into “pots of culture”. What will be strange is not to find people of any nationality. With them, you will gain in academic enrichment but also your open-mindedness.

Needless to say, on a personal level, that this brings a considerable advantage. Going to college in the UK allows you to meet people of all nationalities, learn about other cultures and ways of looking at life, and open your eyes and erase certain prejudices.

5. Improve your job opportunities

Statistics do not lie, less than 5% of those who finish a career in a university in England are unemployed. In short, what to say, that here, the university will give you a series of bases very appreciated by the companies.

6. Large selection of materials

At English university, the amount of materials to choose from far exceeds the choice we are used to in our system. Whether mandatory or optional, the choice is enormous. This allows and makes it easier to move towards the work of your life through the wide range of options.

This is true not only for the university itself, but also for postgraduate students doing masters and doctorates.

7. The University of your Life

Come to a new country, meet new friends, fight with those English words that resist you, learn to live alone…there are things that teachers and books do not teach you. It will mark your life!

The 14 nature parks, forests, beaches, international festivals, bike rides, walking or bus. All these things will make your experience much more interesting and motivating, and when you’re young, all these activities will be more exciting and you’ll want to visit every corner of the country.

If you add to the equation the number of museums, many of them the most important in the world, the pubs of all kinds, taste or colors where you can drink a good pint, eat a fish and chips, will make the streets of London the nicest you’ve seen … In short, the offer of things to do is almost unlimited. You will see, in one year only, you will not have time to see everything.

8. Traveling

How many of the 28 countries in the European Union do you know? Even if France is rather in the center of Europe, traveling is not something free, plane tickets, train and company are not given. Outside of Ireland, you would be surprised how easy and cheap it is to live in the UK.

The facilities for traveling from one point to another are enormous. You have the Young Person’s Rail Card, a youth card that makes rail travel economical and easy to use.

There is also the BritXplorer Pass, which makes it very easy to know the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. You will not have enough time to visit Scotland’s lakes, the ruins of Wales or the thousands and thousands of stories of old England will make the islands a paradise for the most adventurous.

9. Better university preparation

Here you do not study at the university to have a degree in a particular field and then work in this field. Let me explain: some careers such as medicine or architecture, yes, you will work in this area, but these degrees are rather rare. But what we see most often is people who have studied, for example, history and who have ended up working as journalists or accountants. Here you study at the university to acquire knowledge.

Education is work-oriented. That sounds like a truism, but a lot of universities in Europe, everything seems to be geared towards having that little piece of paper that says you have this or that career. The teaching is too theoretical (anyone who already has a career knows how true it is in some countries). The practical part at the university is in the background, only to do an internship or for your end of study project.

In the British university, it works in reverse. The teaching is entirely focused on university students as future workers, not students who, despite their academic knowledge, have no idea how to work in a company.

10. More quality, less quantity

University in the United Kingdom does not last a minimum of 4 years as in most European universities, but only 3 years. So, you will finish before studying and you will enter the job market before. This will give you an advantage over your European competitors, who stay at least 4 years at the university.

11. Scholarships for the university

The United Kingdom has a large scholarship system for university students. The famous loans are also well known, which basically means that you will not start paying your tuition before being paid and earning more than a certain salary per month (This salary must be over 21000 pounds a year). Plus, you only pay a small fee. About £30 a month, as a supplement in your taxes.

12. Benefits in Scotland

The system of university education in Scotland begins a year earlier than in the rest of the UK, at age 17, has two years of undergraduate studies where students can already choose optional subjects for the career that they will want to do it later.

Starting at this age, the career has another advantage: the degree lasts 4 years, while in the rest of Britain, it is only three years. That is, both students complete their university studies at the same time, but some of them will go with a year of preparation more than others. Positive point for companies.

Another great advantage, which many of you will convince to go to Scotland to study and which especially considers as one of the best options that can be taken. The first year of university in Scotland, for both Scottish as for students of the European Union, is free of tuition. Here is a big advantage!

According to his system, this expense, which is often the most expensive for university students when they begin their training, is covered by the Students Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). In other countries like England and Northern Ireland, only 40% of tuition fees are covered, unless you have a scholarship that covers all costs.

University Award in England?

As we have already explained before, studying at a British university is very affordable.

If you are a European citizen and have resided in Europe for the last 3 years, you will have direct access (without draws or other academic conditions) to the UK government support system, and if you are an international student (of a Latin American country, for example) University in the United Kingdom will be much cheaper than in countries like the United States or Canada.

Help systems

  1. a) Student Loan System (University Loan): This is a UK government financial loan of up to 100% of academic fees each year with very favorable conditions for students:
  • Your refund is subject to the future remuneration of the student. The loan only starts to pay off when the student earns more than £21,000 a year. If you are unemployed or start earning less than this amount, you will not pay a refund until you earn the annual minimum wage.
  • In case you are able to start repaying the loan, it will be necessary to pay 9% of the amount that exceeds this £21,000 per year. For example, if the student starts earning a gross annual salary of £25,000, he will pay 9% of that £4,000, or £360 a year, or £30 a month. A very affordable amount compared to the salary received (£2,083 gross per month).
  • If the student has not finished repaying his student loan within 30 years, he is automatically canceled.
  • The student has the obligation to inform, at all times, in which country he is, for whom he works, and what salary he has.
  1. b) Scholarship system: Like the previous help but without having to repay it. In short, the stock market as we all know it, for example, in Scotland, you have a 100% grant, so the university is free.

Registration fees

As you know, the UK is made up of England, Wales and Scotland, and tuition fees for the university and, more specifically, the aid system will be different in each of these territories.

Transportation and maintenance costs

Although there is a Student Loan to cover these expenses, it is only available to residents of the United Kingdom in the last 3 years. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the expenses we will face.

We have to make the difference between living in London or any other city in the UK and, of course, between the lifestyle of the student. It is not the same thing to live in a university residence with a single room as in a shared room. Neither go out to feast every day than go out only on Fridays. You will have to see your minimum monthly expenses and see if you can do it.

The cost of living is something very personal, but below you have an estimate for 39 weeks of course: Minimum to study at the university in the UK

Requirements to Study in England

As we have already told you, to go to university in the UK, you do not need any type of minimum baccalaureate, but rather what you had during high school.

What is the note you need? It depends on the university and the career. The higher the prestige of both, the higher the rating they will demand. There are some universities in which you can enter with a 10 average, while in others you will need an average of at least 16.

Other universities may require you to study a specific subject (for example, have done mathematical or physical specialty to enter engineering) and require in addition, a minimum grade in this subject.

Therefore, every university is a world, but if you have a good high school education, you will not have any problem.

Language requirements

If you come from a non-English speaking country, you will need to certify a minimum of English. Quiet, they do not require you to be bilingual or have a perfect pronunciation. They just want to make sure that you can easily get by without too much trouble at the university (taking the course, asking questions, giving presentations, etc.).

To accredit your level, you must pass the official IELTS exam with a score of between 6 and 7.5 out of 9. This equates to a level a little higher than the average level of the bachelor’s degree. Even so, the exam is very easy to prepare and you just have to dedicate a few months to get the grade you need.

My recommendation is to take the IELTS test in the summer of your first year at high school, since the 2nd year of high school is a year with a higher academic load. It’s like with the theoretical driver’s license, the sooner it’s done, the better for you. But be careful, in this case it is necessary that the certificate has not more than 2 years of seniority. Plan it in advance according to your choices.

Other requirements

  1. a) Personal Statement: a kind of cover letter in which you explain why you should be admitted to this particular university and career, why you want to study this topic, etc. The goal is to determine students’ level of maturity, analytical ability and thinking. This is one of the most important requirements and it is crucial to apply it.
  2. b) Academic reference: Essential requirement. You will need academic references in your application. To do this, simply ask a teacher at your school or institute to sign the letter of recommendation for that university’s studies.
  3. c) Internal Exams: Some universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge, may require you to write an exam to access certain careers such as medicine or veterinary medicine.
  4. d) Testing: Some universities may require a test or essay to measure your level in this field of study.
  5. e) Extras: In the United Kingdom, volunteering or internships are taken into account. In some careers, like medicine, it’s almost mandatory.

Steps to follow to study at the University in the United Kingdom

  1. Choose five universities that catch your eye and which career you want to study. Do not forget especially this: Fill in the entry requirements.
  2. The dates of receipt of applications generally vary between January 15, October 15 and March 25 of the year in which you are in terminal.
  3. If your level of English needs to improve, you can start studying with different English courses offered or with those known as “year zero“. The foundation years are very interesting and allow you to improve your English, prepare for college and learn more about the career you want to do.
  4. You must collect all the documents, identity documents, certificates of studies, certificates of course you have made, diplomas, letters of recommendation, etc. Everything counts, but especially the grades of the secondary school, from the second to the final year, as well as the voluntary. In addition, you will need an academic reference from your school and a forecast of the final average grades you will have in the final year.
  5. Write a kind of “cover letter” where you will express why you want to study at a university in England, describe yourself, say your achievements, your ambitions, your goals and especially your deep desire to study in the university you have chosen. Here is more information on how to write the personal statement.
  6. Send the application form via UCAS with the list of universities you have chosen.
  7. Universities will contact you, usually by e-mail, and give you the answer on your admission. They always answer, whether for a positive or negative answer. Sometimes you will need to send an additional document or to fulfill a requirement, they will give you a deadline to hand them over to be admitted.
  8. Now that you have several university offers on the table, you will have to choose the University of Preference and another university as “plan b”, just in case eventually you do not meet some of the requirements of the first.
  9. Here is! Everything is done now, only one thing remains: enjoy the best years of your life at university.

Important dates at the university in the United Kingdom

If you want to study at the university in the UK (or at least try it) the next course, it is crucial that you keep in mind the following dates for sending the application and the interaction with universities. A problem with deadlines can ruin the entire process of entering the university.

  • June 15: Obtaining the notes of the 1st.
  • September 1st: The application period begins, you can send your academic file to the university through UCAS.
  • October 15: Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and some specific careers in other universities (medicine, etc.)
  • January 15th: Deadline for registration. Everyone who sends it later will be at a disadvantage.
  • February 25th: Deadline “second chance” in case you have exceeded the deadline of January 15th.
  • June 8: Deadline to answer the universities that offered us a place.

Do not worry and do not be overwhelmed, the process of selecting a university is very simple and everything is done online on the UCAS website.
